Gender Identification Information
As a sponsored youth program of the University of Virginia, governed by its policy of nondiscrimination, the Young Writers Workshop provides housing based on gender-identity.
The number of applicants accepted to the program is governed by housing accommodations available at the program’s host institution. The program’s current dormitory assignment contains six floors of double- and triple-occupancy rooms. Each floor occupancy is defined by gender. Program participants are assigned to any given room on these floors on the basis of their indicated birth gender. If a participant’s gender identity is otherwise indicated, with parental consent, the participant is assigned according to that person’s indicated gender identity. If a participant’s gender identity is non-binary or other, with parental consent the participant is assigned to the birth gender floor of choice.
Participants on any given floor may be assigned to a dormitory room shared with up to two other roommates of the same birth gender and/or gender identity. All residents on the same floor share an in-common bathroom and are members of a smaller group referred to as a “suite” to which one resident counselor is assigned. Note: Housing accommodations are subject to change by the host institution; if there are any changes affecting a student’s floor assignment, applicants are notified accordingly.
