Young Writers Workshop

Est. 1982

University of Virginia

When it launched in 1982, the UVA Young Writers Workshop was the country’s flagship residential program for high school students.  In the 42 years since, the Workshop’s successful model has been variously replicated by others, the result being, in effect, a “generic” workshop that has become more widely available to young writers.  However, that model doesn’t necessarily reflect recent innovations in the contemporary literary world; most importantly, it does not consider the ways in which the pandemic has profoundly affected how students think and learn.

To develop an enhanced model through which students can thrive as artists in this altered world, the UVA Young Writers will remain on hiatus until further notice, the goal being to reimagine what a powerful, transformative workshop can be for today’s young writers.
