Jodie Hollander

Alumna, 1992-93

Jodie Hollander attended the Workshop in poetry from 1992-93.

Where are you living and what brought you there?

I currently live in Washington DC; however, at the time I attended the workshops I was living in Milwaukee, WI.

Where are you working and what do you enjoy about it?

I work at Commonwealth Academy, a school for kids with special needs.  I enjoy my students very much, as they see the world from a unique perspective.

What do you find yourself most often reading/listening to lately and why?

I listen to Robert Frost on my ipod, as I am learning meter.  I also love to read Larkin.

What are you working on right now and what does it represent in the larger body of your artistic accomplishments?

My next book, Horse Bones, and most specifically working on writing in various metrical forms- dimeter, trimeter, and loose iambic pentameter.

What are your publications, performances, albums, and/or achievements that seem most important to you at this point in time?

The publication of my book, The Humane Society, and the forthcoming Hawthornden fellowship award.

How would you characterize the influence of your YWW experience in your life?

The beginning of my journey where I first learned what I was meant to do with my life.

What’s the best advice you can give a Young Writer (in general or in your specific genre)?

If this is your dream, do not let anyone talk you out of it.
